Meet Our Original Buffalo Soldiers - Los Angeles Chapter (cont'd)

Trooper Alfred Evans is a WWII Vet. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1940. He served in the 9th Cavalry at Fort Riley, KS. When the cavalry regiments were deactivated, Trooper Evans was assigned to the 69th Ordinance Ammunitions Company.

He was one of many soldiers who were transported to the war in Europe via the Queen Mary, the same ship that is currently a tourist attraction in Long Beach, CA. Trooper Evans served in Gen. Patton’s famous Red Ball Express. Trooper Evans received an Honorable Discharge in October of 1945. He transferred to Fiddler’s Green.


PictureTrooper Waldo Henderson
Trooper Waldo Henderson is a WWII Vet – was drafted into the U.S. Army in the summer of 1943. He received his draft notice while living in Tulsa, OK and reported for military service at Fort Sill. Trooper Henderson was assigned to the 10th Cavalry Headquarters Troop at Camp Lockett, CA where he received his basic training in horsemanship. When the 2nd Cavalry Division was shipped out (dismounted) to North Africa and then deactivated, Trooper Henderson was there. He ended up with the 1334th Engineers in Italy. Trooper Henderson received his Honorable Discharge in 1945 at Fort Lewis in Washington.

Trooper Henderson has been a member of the Greater Los Angeles Area Chapter of the 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association since it received its Charter on July 30th, 1988. Trooper Henderson has held the offices of Vice President and Treasurer with the Los Angeles Chapter. Like many of our original Buffalo Soldier veterans Trooper Waldo Henderson was present at Fort Leavenworth on July 25th, 1992 when the Buffalo Soldier Monument was dedicated by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

PictureTrooper Andrew Isaacs
Trooper Andrew Isaacs is a WWII Vet who enlisted in the Army in 1940 and was assigned to the famous Buffalo Soldier 10th Cavalry Regiment. He was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, the original home of the Buffalo Soldiers. While at Fort Leavenworth Trooper, Isaacs was assigned to Headquarters Troop. When World War II started, he was transferred to help form the 93rd Division at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. Trooper Isaacs received an Honorable Discharge from the Army in 1945.

He has held the office of President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association.

Douglass Jones
Trooper Frederick Douglass Jones is a WWII Vet – enlisted in the Army on March 3rd, 1943 — one month after the War Department had reactivated the 2nd Cavalry Division, which was comprised of the original 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Regiments and two new horse regiments the 27th & 28th Cavalries. Trooper Jones was stationed at Camp Lockett with the 28th Cavalry, sister regiment to the 10th Cavalry. While in the U.S. the 2nd Cavalry Division provided Border Patrol duty between the U.S. and Mexico. In 1944, the 2nd Cavalry Division was shipped out to North Africa and then unceremoniously deactivated. Trooper Jones was reassigned to the 92nd Infantry Division where he saw action in Italy and in the Philippines, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He transferred to Fiddler’s Green.


PictureTrooper Robert McDaniel
Trooper Robert McDaniel is a WWII Vet  who enlisted in the Army in 1939. He was assigned to the 9th Cavalry at Fort Riley, KS. Later he was transferred to the 4th Cavalry Brigade and was the orderly for Gen. Benjamin O. Davis and his son, Col. Benjamin O. Davis Jr., who went on to command the 332nd Fighter Group, better known as the Tuskegee Airmen. After working for the father and son for over two years, Trooper McDaniel was assigned to the 743rd Military Brigade. He ended up going to North Africa and eventually on to Italy. Trooper McDaniel received an Honorable Discharge in 1945. He transferred to Fiddler’s Green.


PictureTrooper Henry Phillips
Trooper Henry Phillips is a WWII Vet. He was drafted into the Army in 1943. He received basic training at Camp Ellis in Illinois. After basic training he was shipped out to New Guinea. Trooper Phillips saw action in the Philippines and in Okinawa, Japan. He received a Honorable Discharge in 1946.
